PAWS IN BALANCE ~ Nurturing ~ Relaxing ~ Invigorating

Why Swimming?

PHYSICALLYThere are multiple benefits from swimming in warm water including improving strength, muscular endurance, circulation, range of motion, and weight reduction.  It is also great for the athletic dog to maintain that competitive edge in the off season or during inclement weather, and to recover from a strenuous event.

BEHAVIORALLY- Proper handling and adequate exercise support better behavior.

EMOTIONALLY- Successful, low impact exercise reduces frustration, depression, and stress and improves the overall psychological well-being of the dog.

Who is Swimming for?

Swimming in warm water encourages muscles to relax during a non-weight bearing exercise. Your veterinarian may suggest it as the exercise of choice for overweight dogs, dogs with hip or elbow dysplasia, dogs who have had an amputation, or for geriatric dogs who might have muscle atrophy, arthritis, or neurological conditions.

Your vet may also recommend swimming for pre-surgery exercise to build muscle mass and to acclimate the dog to the pool to prepare for post-surgery swimming.  Dogs with injuries to elbows, knees, hips and with spinal conditions such as paralysis, degenerative myelopathy, intervertebral disc disease, or spinal injury may also benefit from warm water assisted swimming.

It is important to note that the services at Paws In Balance are not considered medical procedures. It is highly recommended that you visit your veterinarian for a complete diagnosis of your dog's condition and to discuss warm water swimming and exercise options before starting at Paws In Balance.  Mindy will work with your veterinarian to customize a program to meet your specific needs.

If your dog is limping or injured, or if you suspect any type of health problem, please contact your vet immediately!
